NRC Membership

The club's membership year runs from 1 September through to 31 August. 

Membership to Nelson Rowing Club opens up many opportunities to enjoy the sport of rowing.  We are very fortunate to have a boat shed that would be the envy of many rowing clubs around the country.  We have a fleet of well maintained rowing skiffs and coastal rowing boats, along with oars and blades and all the equipment and paraphernalia required to make rowing safe and enjoyable.

Membership types at Nelson Rowing Club

Competitive Member

A competitive member at NRC is someone who wants to be part of the competitive training and racing team and represent NRC at local and national regattas.  A competitive rower for NRC commits to:

  • Participating in a training programme
  • Attend regattas both locally and nationally
  • Communicate availability for training and regatta attendance to the coaches and logistics manager
  • Treat all equipment with respect
  • Accepting that other athlete groups may have priority for training times at certain points of the season
  • Be a supportive club member, recognising that all members are there for the love of the sport.

Nelson Rowing Club will provide those competitive rowers with the equipment suited to their ability, level of racing and commitment, coaching to help the athlete compete to the best of their ability, training programme guidance, regatta logistical support and communication from a coach and equipment availability to maintain a ‘no surprises’ culture.

Non- Competitive Member

A non-competitive member at NRC is someone who rows for enjoyment rather than to compete and train full time during the season.  A non-competitive member at NRC is eligible for the following:

  • May enter all local regattas without any restrictions
  • May enter up to 1 regatta via the RowIT entry system per membership year provided the regatta does not require a RowingNZ race licence.  This includes Marlborough Champs Regatta and South Island Masters Regatta.

A non-competititve member will commit to treating all equipment with respect and being a supportive club member, recognising that all members are there for the love of the sport.

NRC will provide well maintained and set up equipment for non-competitive members, coaching guidance and technical guidelines, recognising many of the non-competitive members are self coached and coached by peers and provide communication of equipment availability to maintain a ‘no surprises’ culture.

Those non-competitive members who remain at college will require supervised on water rowing by a safety boat.  This will be made available by NRC when there is boat availability and coaches and safety boat drivers time allows.

Coxswain

The most important members of the rowing club, the coxswain can form part of either the competitive or non-competitive squads throughout the season.  NRC will provide all coxswains with up to date safety gear and equipment, which the member commits to treating with respect.  The coxswain will be required to be a supportive club member, recognising all members are there for the love of the sport.

Parent / Guardian

Parent / Guardian membership aligns with the Rowing New Zealand membership which is coming into the system over the next year or so.  NRC encourages parents and guardians of our college rowers to join NRC as a member and accept our code of conduct to support all rowers within NRC and recognise all members are here for the love of the sport. 

Getting involved is a great way to meet other rowing parents, be part of the regatta and fundraising teams and see what a great sport rowing can be for your rower.

Supporting Member

A supporting member at NRC includes our coaches, honorary members and volunteers to the club.  We encourage all supporting members to register with the club to be kept informed via email of the going ons at NRC and by doing this accept the NRC code of conduct, recognising all members are here for the love of the sport.

Life Member

A Life Member at NRC is an honoured membership awarded by the Nelson Rowing Club Committee throughout the years.  We recommended our NRC Life Members register with NRC for on going communication from the club about what’s happening at NRC.
