Coastal Rowing

We're big fans of coastal rowing at NRC.  Bigger, wider and more stable than their traditional counterparts, coastal boats offer our members more opportunities to get out on the water and explore the beautiful coastline of the Nelson region.

The club is proud to have in its coastal fleet a quad, double and single for our members to use.  Here's what you can do with them!

Friday Coffee Cruise

Most Friday mornings you'll find a group of Masters women taking the coastal quad out for a row. From the club they head out through the cut and then over to Tahuna.  Takeaway coffees and a chat on the beach before heading back to the club past Fifeshire Rock and Haulashore Island.  Come join us! (And men are very welcome too!)

Daytrip Adventures

Take the coastals out for a rowing adventure around Tasman Bay.  Head out to the cardinal marker for a longer row, over to Rabbit Island for a swim, or Mapua for lunch at the wharf.  The coastal boats are the perfect way to explore the beautiful coastline around Nelson.  Start planning your next adventure today!

Coastal Events

Coastal boats are perfect for longer adventures and event racing.  NRC members have toured in the Abel Tasman and Marlborough Sounds, as well as competed in events like the Best/Rough Island Mid-winter Race and Picton Long Distance Paddle.

Myles' Memorial Row

In May 2022, 36 club members took part in a 70km coastal row from Awaroa to Nelson to commemorate the passing of club stalwart Myles Sellers.  It was an epic day and a wonderful tribute to Myles, and the club is planning for this to be an annual event.

Beach Sprints

Affectionately known as the "wilder cousin" of flat water racing, Beach Sprints is fast and furious and a lot of fun!  Nelson Rowing Club has been an early adopter of coastal rowing and beach sprints, and is the host of the NZ National Beach Sprints Champs.  Check out our Beach Sprints page to learn more about this exciting aspect of rowing.

Winter is better when you can go out in a Coastal!
